This is YOUR panel, please help us develop it for you
by Tomi Ahonen - Monday, 5 September 2005, 11:40 AM

Hi all Panelists

This is our panel, or even more so, this is YOUR panel. We - Ajit, Peter and I, want to make this work ever better for all of us. We may be able to think of good improvements but more likely it is you who will think of the innovations first. Please let us know what you would like us to do to make this panel even better.

Please keep in mind that Peter's budget and IT support abilities are modest, as this is a free vehicle and is borrowing on the IT capacities built for supporting Oxford University coursework - this does pose some restrictions on the exact formats and technical abilities. But regardless, please do let us know what you would like, and we will try to evolve this site to be ever better suited for all of us interested in mobile apps.

My wishlist :-)

  • RSS and TrackBack <-- Nice to have but not critical (to me personally)
  • Newsletter/daily digest of messages on the site <-- Very nice to have
  • Perpetually sticky logins! <-- This is my most wished for feature. I'd really like it if I didn't have to type in my password everytime I came to the site. In fact, the site even timed me out once when I was browsing some of the discussions.

Thanks for reading!

Hi Murli,

Thanks for the feedback on the site.

We are working on the RSS feed and hope this will be up within a week or two. I'll also look into TrackBack and see if it's something we can set up.

Likewise, I'll see what we can do with the login process.

Anyone else got any thoughts and ideas on improvements we can make?

Regards

WOW that's fast. Okay, here's another one for you: a Google search box. We don't need this now but imagine in a month's time, six month's time, a year's time...

Whoops, just noticed that there already is a search box at the top of some of the pages. So I guess all you that's needed is to make the box ubiquitous.

Thank you both Murli for wishes, and especially Peter for your incredible ability to deliver :-) For all Panelists - we are already over 130 members - remember first, that this is OUR panel, your desire is equally as relevant as mine, so please do take an active interest in helping build this into something truly awesome. As many of you know, I am already actively promoting this myself, but my wish is that anyone who joins, will find so much value, they will start to promote this Panel further. A real viral marketing success. The other thing to keep in mind is that this site is only five days old, and is intended to remain non-profit, so Peter will naturally have limited resources :-)

I don't know if this is the right place but I don't seem to be receiving any daily emails from this panel or from topics I've subscribed to. Has anyone else faced the same problem?

Hi Murli,

Another one for the IT support guys - I'll see what they come up with.

On a note to everyone, we will listen to any suggestions for improvements but it may take some time for results to come through as our IT guys (like in all IT departments I've known) are extremely pushed for time.

Things can and will improve so that we all have the platform we require to continue to grow and evolve this community.

Keep the feedback coming....

Regards

Peter

Santa Peter, Pllllease fill my stocking!

;-)
  1. Guest entries: A lot of people find the registration process a big hassle, especially since they only plan to be active for only one reply ;-) .So guest entry seems like a good option, esp. in the light of 2ch
This actually means that people should be allowed to put in anonymous entries, because the mobile application topic is something which interests everyone, not just guys in the industry.
  1. Is it possible to reduce the number of windows one has to go through to reach a discussion?
  2. If your RSS feed is ready, then we can also turn forum oxford into a WAP site using WINKSITE, since it's only fitting that a forum about mobile applications should be accessible on WAP too ;-)
My list has just begun :-P

Actually i would prefer no guests - Santa Peter, Pllllease fill my stocking!

Hi Werner

I hear you and understand. I would, however, prefer that those who join this discussion board are truly interested in the topic and would stay for at least a while (and contribute).

I would prefer not to have anonymous entries and a guest option. So "Santa Peter" (ha ha, very good name for Peter..)  please don't rush to implement this before we hear from other opinions as well? And I have no intention of attempting to force my own thoughts on this, but rather would ask for our 350 or so members to comment. Lets do what the community wants   :-)

How about others there in Oxford Forum land? Do we want to allow guests posting anonymously or force them to sign up?

Santa Peter, One more wish!

No problem... Just a suggestion ;-)
Another one.
  1. Put the last entry at the top of the discussion, so that people don't have to scroll through hundreds of posts (in the near future:-P) to check the last post.

Hello Werner and Tomi,

Werner - thanks for the suggestions. Not sure about the Santa Pete bit though - I don't even have a beard!

Let's do as Tomi suggests and wait to see what others think. This being a community, we should take a democratic approach as far as possible! I also think that as members are putting their names up on posts along with their thoughts, questions, opinions and ideas, it may not be fair to allow guest users in who can post replies anonymously. You can always register using an alias.

WINKsite - Just had a look at their website and I think this would allow more accessibility. Anyone any thoughts?

Peter

Summary
by Werner Egipsy Souza - Wednesday, 26 October 2005, 10:06 AM

I find that a lot of the topics today, are very interlinked.
Also, Topics which have been sleeping for sometime, would need to be summarised so that anyone reading the post for the first time, may easily get a gist of the subject.
Same goes for active topics. If there are other topics which are related with the active topic, we should summarise the linking topics, and put this summary as a post in the existing topic.

I tried to do this for the "Every Man is a mechanic" post, as an example.
;-)
